It's no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention that the video game industry is currently in massive upheaval. Bloated budgets, anti-gamer sentiment and poorly executed launches have led to the closure of dozens of small and large studios this year alone. While some AAA titles have seen some financial success, it hasn't been enough to pull the industry out of it's downward spiral.
That being said, there are still several games that have managed to have both technically solid gameplay and great financial support from gamers in 2024. Stellar Blade was a huge success, even with the controversy surrounding the censoring of protagonist Eve's wardrobe with a day 1 patch. Stellar Blade had enough to offer that it was able to easily leap these hurdles and maintains a very positive review score from gamers and critics alike.
Mecha BREAK, a game that is being developed by Chinese studio Amazing Seasun Games, looked like it could have potentially been another Stellar Blade if the devs had played their cards right. Unfortunately, this 6v6 Mech shooter just experienced it's first major controversy, after it was discovered that they had hired a third party company that was abusing it's powers to censor strangely specific words in game chat.
As pointed out in a tweet by former WoW developer Mark Kern, aka @Grummz, the game Mecha BREAK was allowing the names of Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to be typed out and seen in game chat, while current GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump had his name unceremoniously censored.
Mecha BREAK @MechaBREAK CENSORS TRUMP. Leaves Kamala and Biden alone.

I've gotten a report that Mecha BREAK is censoring Trump from chat, but not Kamala Harris or Biden. I tested it myself to verify.

"Mecha BREAK @MechaBREAK CENSORS TRUMP," Grummz posted. "Leaves Kamala and Biden alone. I've gotten a report that Mecha BREAK is censoring Trump from chat, but not Kamala Harris or Biden. I tested it myself to verify. I've reached out to their community manager to ask about this obvious political interference in gaming."
To the developer's credit, they were quick to take immediate action after having this brought to their attention. Within the course of a few hours, they released a statement that was equal parts humble and gracious, but also left many new questions unanswered.
Attention Pilots,

In a post to X, Mecha BREAK responded by saying, "Attention Pilots. During the past few days of our playtest, we have received feedback that our list of censored words in the game's chat was in need of some refinement. If you have been offended by any player language in chat, please accept our apologies."
"English is not our team's first language, as we are an Asian game studio and have never attempted to launch a global game before. We sourced a list of words from a third party company which included words for multiple languages that would not likely come up during gameplay, as game chat is primarily intended to be used for team coordination. We are currently in the process of revising the censored word list and making changes in real time."
While this statement is a step in the right direction, the fact that they did not name the third party who seemed to act in a blatantly politically biased manner is definitely a massive cause for concern. Woke community managers and DEI consulting firms have done their part to alienate and drive possible customers away from several high budget games, so the last thing a studio like Amazing Seasun Games needs is to saddle itself with the baggage that a company like Sweet Baby Inc brings with them.A couple of hours after I reported it, @mechaBREAK has apologized.

The @MechaBREAK used a third party firm to source their censored word list, which included the word “Trump” but not Biden or Kamala Harris.
Ahem…please stop using woke consulting firms.
