Marathon Fails To Beat It's Launch Day Player Count As Bungie Asks Reviewers To Hold Off On Final Scores!

Bungie's latest FPS title Marathon is now out, and despite strong launch day numbers on Steam, player counts are already in a slight decline. Leading up to launch, Marathon easily broke into the Top Sellers chart on Steam, passing rival extraction shooter ARC Raiders and the recently released Resident Evil Requiem.

However, just one day after launching, Marathon has already been dethroned from Steam's number one spot by rouge like deck builder Slay the Spire 2, a game that saw more than 400k concurrent players on Steam, while Marathon had a CCU that couldn't quite reach 100k. There are several factors that play into this, such as the lower price of StS2 and the more niche appeal of both the art style of Marathon and of extraction shooters as a whole.

Now Bungie has reportedly asked reviewers and journalists to hold off on giving final scores to their game, as there is still work being done on endgame content. While it is not unusual among the mainstream press to wait on final scores for a working review, it does raise eyebrows among many who are already skeptical of Bungie.

While this could be seen as a reasonable request by Bungie rather than a veiled threat to relinquish future access to their games from those in the media who dissent, it is a bad look regardless given the numerous controversies this game has found itself at the center of. Furthermore, members of the games media seemingly running defense for Bungie only makes the situation all the more dubious. Paul Tassi of Forbes was one such journalist who seems more than happy to oblige with Bungie's request.
While it remains to be seen if Marathon will have long-term success, it seems to have found a small but loyal fanbase thus far, which is something the likes of Concord and Highguard were never able to do.
